A new National Cable & Telecommunications Association survey of more than 100,000 Americans found that a majority of people want the Internet to be more trustworthy.
The ongoing survey is powered by Google Consumer Surveys and is conducted over the Internet. Web users are asked nine questions ranging from what they would change about the Internet to their level of trust in the answers they get online.
Fifty-two percent of respondents said if they could change one thing about the Internet, they would make it more "trustworthy." No other answer came close, with 13 percent of respondents saying "intelligent" and 8 percent saying "independent."
Asked if they trusted answers they received over the Internet, the most mistrust came from California and New Jersey, with 36 percent respondents in each state answering "no." By contrast, Montana was the most trusting state, with only 23 percent saying "no."
"Instead of surveying a few thousand consumers like many others do, we felt that a project of this sheer size and scope was a direct correlation to how the Internet has infiltrated our society and culture in so many positive ways," NCTA CEO Michael Powell said. "We hope these results can be examined by experts and consumers alike to provide a comprehensive take on how the Internet can evolve in the future."
